We chose to call our business ‘Starlight' because it represents the underlying belief that everyone is a ‘star' and that, if we remain true to our inner self, we will radiate this light and be who we are capable of being. However, for most of us, we have had some negative experiences that have knocked our self confidence or self belief. If we are lucky we have continued to receive more positive affirmations than negative pronouncements and are managing our lives relatively well. For others however, we may have adopted behaviours that become more self destructive. It may be necessary therefore to spend time reflecting on why our lives are not bringing us happiness, reward, contentment, love and other positive reinforcements, in order to redress the balance.

Discrimination can clearly impact on a person's ability to ‘shine' and all of Starlight's courses and events are designed to encourage participants to be who they are capable of being by no longer being at the effect of their own or other's negative opinions and prejudice. There is an opportunity to reflect on where these values and beliefs originate and to let go of any attitudes that cause friction and disunity.

Who are we?

Sue Funge developed each of the OCN courses following her years of experience working with vulnerable people, including homeless young people, underachieving children of African Caribbean heritage, young people not in education, employment or training, excluded students and young offenders. She also set up and facilitates a community based project specifically aimed at supporting families with black children of mixed heritage. This group also provides a multicultural book and toy library to local residents. She has taught ‘A' level students and undergraduates studying at Oxford Brookes University and Open University. In 1996 a book she co-wrote was published by Trentham Books entitled Celebrating Identity, focusing on meeting the needs of black children of mixed heritage.

Glen Berley worked with Sue to develop the young men and fathers course in the summer of 2006 and has co-facilitated the ‘Move on Up!' and ‘Going for Gold' courses. He returned to study coaching and mentoring with Oxford Brookes University in 2008 and an Open University course on social change in 2006. He is also an excellent outreach worker, motivating and inspiring others to get involved. As an Oxford born resident of Jamaican heritage, he has strong links with the local community and has recently set up a father's group known as Glad 4 Dads. He completed the City & Guilds Preparation to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector in December 2008.

Rory Campbell, Sue's son has also completed his Lifelong Learning Sector teaching qualification and is currently setting up a project for work with young people using the medium of music, performance poetry and positive lyrics. He is a member of the G Block Family and continues to write and perform locally. He is also a Director of The House of Media CIC in Blackbird Leys, set up in August 2009, with the aim of providing a range of opportunities for local residents and young people; helping to develop their skills, provide volunteer opportunities, courses and work experience in all aspects of media.
